Javert being -not- Javert

Please let me explain.
I know Javert is a 52-years old, UGLY guy.
But he's my favourite character in Les Mis. Therefore, I idealize. A lot. I did the same with Snape.
Besides, why can't he have been a young, rather attractive (IMO) person, some years ago?

Now that I think of it, my favourite chars in the Harry Potter series were Snape and Luna and, in Les Misérables, Javert and Eponine. I can see a pattern...
By the way, my Javert has no ponytail because I read the book before even knowing a musical -with a ponytail- existed.
...Oh well, excusatio non petita, accusatio manifesta, isn't it?
